When your kids hit the door, the first thing they probably want is something eat. After a long day of school their minds and bodies are craving energy. But what you give your kids after school can make a big difference in how healthy and energetic they feel.
Many parents feed their children foods such as cookies and processed foods. While these give quick energy, they’re not the best choice for your child. Instead of high calorie, high fat treats you need to focus on foods that will provide good nutrition for your child.
Veggies. If you keep vegetables cut up and available at all times, it’s easy to give your child serving after school. Try cutting up carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, and celery and keeping them in the refrigerator. You can also keep a vegetable dip prepared if your children don’t like eating vegetables without any dressing.
Fruits. Fruit is another great snack for kids after school. Keeping apples, pears, strawberries, peaches, and plums stocked in your refrigerator will give your kids the opportunity to eat these healthy snacks. When you get home from the store, wash your fruit immediately and put it in a bowl where your kids can have easy access to it.
Natural Snacks. The best snacks are those things that you can find in nature. You can also give your child nuts, popcorn, dried fruit, string cheese, yogurt, and milk as a snack.
The general rule of thumb for after school snacks is to choose those that are natural and not processed. Avoid added sugar and fat. You may also want to limit foods that are high in preservatives and extra coloring.
Dipping fruits or vegetables in peanut butter is a great way to help your children enjoy their flavor without adding unhealthy calories.
Unfortunately, many snacks that are marketed for children aren’t the best things for them. As a parent, you’ll have to be diligent to make sure your children are eating foods that are good for them.
