Getting A Handle On ADHD, Exploring The Options For Diagnosis And Treatment Of ADHD

Diagnosis and treatment of ADHD can be a difficult and complicated process, but with an accurate diagnosis and the proper kinds of treatment it is possible for ADHD children to live perfectly normal, productive lives. In order to get your child on the right path it is necessary to identify their problem and target the individual characteristics of it that can be unique to each child.

Generally, ADHD is defined as a social networking disorder which includes a variety of symptoms such as lack of concentration, hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsiveness. ADHD patients have a hard time focusing and can often display uncontrollable physical jerkiness, all of which makes it very difficult for them to engage in routine social situations, including classroom learning.

Many times, the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD can be a tricky process since the main symptoms can also be symptoms of other disorders, such as Asperger's Syndrome or even just be the result of basic anger management or behavioral problems. Only when disruptive behavior affects at least two areas of a child's life is a proper diagnosis of ADHD made. Otherwise, it is likely that there may be some other cause for the behavior.

Because it is easy to misdiagnose ADHD and because the medications used to treat it can have serious effects, it is important that an accurate diagnosis be made and that only the proper professionals are involved in doing so, along with the patient and his/her parents. Once the diagnosis has been made, steps for treatment can then be considered.

Until recently, when considering the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, the first choice of treatment has been stimulant based medications. While these medications are effective at easing symptoms, they are not without their drawbacks including serious, sometimes life threatening, side effects. Also, they do nothing to address the chemical and neurological imbalances which are the underlying cause of ADHD, so any positive effect they may have is necessarily temporary.

Other forms of treatment include changes in diet, behavior management and the use of homeopathic remedies. Removing natural stimulants like sugar and caffeine, limiting artificial colors and flavors, and eliminating wheat and refined carbohydrates from the diet have all been shown to have a calming effect on ADHD patients. Behavior management techniques such as auditory and neurofeedback and music therapy have also been quite helpful as they allow patients to focus better and control their own brain activity.

Nothing has been more exciting in the area of diagnosis and treatment of ADHD then the development of homeopathic remedies. Made from a special blend of herbs and other plant based ingredients like Hyoscyamus, Arsen iod, and Tuberculinum, these remedies go beyond surface symptoms to target the underlying cause of ADHD, for a more profound and long term result.

Having your child diagnosed with ADHD is never easy, but it is a vital first step in helping them to control and overcome their symptoms in order to live a full and productive life. If you suspect that your child may suffer from ADHD, do not hesitate to go to your doctor and express your concerns. Remember, you can't get your child on the road to living normally until you take that first step.
