There are many types of auto insurance cover, although the majority of the population probably think that insurance is just insurance, with little or no difference besides the cost. Without decent information about automotive insurance, you may well find out too late, that you are in fact not covered as well as you thought.
The Cost to You.
Having even the least amount of available motor insurance, means that at least you will not be out of pocket for the medical cost of any injuries sustained by anyone else.
The barest necessity of motoring insurance, is just that. No matter your record as a driver, you may still be involved in a major incident due to the recklessness of another. It will be at that point, that you may discover that, the barest necessity of motoring insurance, is just not enough.
You may very well be an exemplary driver, with consummate skills and a shining record. Your driving record may be unmatched by anyone who has ever driven an automobile. This will mean nothing if a drunk driver plows into you. Considering the sheer volume of drivers out on the road that have no experience and little intelligence, you being a shining example is not going to help you, when they are coming your way on a particularly bad day.
Merely buying auto insurance to cover yourself legally, may ultimately cost you a lot more. You may think that you are now protected in any accident. However, it might be, that you are not covered as well as you had thought.
Depending on where you live, the laws covering auto insurance liability can differ. Do you know what liabilities you are covered for?
Types of Auto Insurance Cover This is a small list of common insurance coverage for vehicles.
Full Coverage. For all intents and purposes, you are covered completely.
Uninsured Motorist. Often an option with full coverage and well worth it. Coverage for yourself and your passengers, should the driver of the other vehicle not have the legal requirement of insurance. The insurance company pays the difference between what the other driver can afford and the amount payable, had the other been insured as required by law.
No-fault Law. Covering personal medical expenses to an amount pre-determined by your insurance company. You are covered regardless of who is at fault, providing you have the legally required minimum of insurance.
Bodily Injury Liability. Any death or injury resulting from an incident you are responsible for as the owner of the car involved, is covered by Bodily Injury Liability. Also covered will be expenses for loss of income, long-term care, hospitalization pain and suffering, rehabilitation, etcetera.
Property Damage Liability. Property Damage Liability, often included with Bodily Injury Liability, covers damage or harm to another's property, by a vehicle you are the owner of. This includes, but is not limited to, any other vehicle not yours, a residence or any part thereof such as gazebos, ponds, fences, etcetera. Again, the limit to recompense is pre-determined by the insurer.
Medical Only. As implied, medical expenses only are covered.
Trying to get away with paying the least possible amount for your vehicle insurance, may end up being a fools errand. You never know what is just around the corner, so to speak. Being under-insured, when you could have easily afforded more, may ultimately leave you with a lot of grief, if you are not as well covered as you could have been.
Understanding vehicle insurance coverage basics, can only be beneficial to you, should you be caught up in an accident. Being unaware of the differences in the types of automobile insurance coverage available, could leave you in dire straights if you thought all insurance was the same and only got covered for the barest minimum.
