We often flounder a little when we begin a new diet. We often become stressed and uncertain. It is hard to decide if the cause is emotional or due the changes in our dietary habits. This can lead us to confusion, stress and uncertainty about how we can adapt to this new regime.
There are many solutions we may find useful in alleviating these problems. Hobbies and other interests can help.
Anything that can distract our thoughts and minds away from dwelling on food and drink, or stress and worries can only be a good thing. Try to consider what activities give us pleasure and we enjoy doing. Perhaps we have had hobbies in the past that we used to enjoy but no longer engage in.
We may enjoy gardening, painting, needlework, jigsaws, knitting or writing there are so many options to choose from. If we can focus on something we can enjoy, it will distract our attentions away from any problems we have.
The difficulty is often implementing these interests or hobbies into our daily routine. We have to try and set aside a little time every day to do one or two of these pursuits, even if we can only slot in a half hour here and there. It is surprising what a difference these distractions can make to our stress levels, emotions, patience and attitude to our diet.
We all feel a little down at sometime or other, and there is no better way to quash stress, pressure or depression than to divert our attentions to something constructive or creative. Pouring out our woes in writing, splashing paint onto a canvas, moulding clay, what better way to suppress our frustrations and calm our stress levels?
It is not always possible to fulfil this need of self expression immediately, but we can put it on hold and at the first opportunity we can let it out. We will feel so much better, calming our stress, or dispelling our depression in this way rather than taking refuge in food and drink.
It will take a little time to form a pattern of self help in this way, but the benefits are well worth the effort. Once we have engaged in our new regime of creativity and new found hobbies, we will be surprised what a difference it has made to our attitude to problems and stress related issues.
We may be a little sceptical of the beneficial effects of these techniques, but we should be open minded and give it a try. What do we have to loose? It can only improve things and there may be other advantages, perhaps we may acquire a new skill or talent along the way.
