Most of us tend to avoid anything that's very difficult or challenging, simply because we often don't feel like we have the energy and stamina to keep pushing against the resistance the obstacles create in our path through life. Diets are no different - how many times have you started a diet and eventually quit?
Whether you quit within a few days, or you're one of the rare few who managed to hang in there for a substantial length of time, the fact remains that you are just as susceptible to defeat as the rest of us.
Below are a few common diet obstacles, along with some tips for effectively overcoming them:
- Boredom
Sometimes the food choices allowed on diet plans are . . . less than inspiring. Who wants to eat nothing but fruit, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains? Not that those foods taste terrible; they're just not very exciting. This is especially true if you've been following the same plan for several months or even years - you start craving something different!
Overcoming boredom is as simple as hunting down some new and exciting recipes to stimulate your taste buds. The internet is a wonderful resource for that. Simply hop onto your favorite search engine website, and do a search for "healthy recipes," "healthy meal plans," "diet recipes," "low calorie meals" or something similar (if you're following a specific plan like a low-carb diet, you can include that in the search string.
Like magic, you've got hundreds, maybe thousands, of new recipes to try. You can also try modifying some of your old favorite recipes to be lower in calories, fat and sugar. You can find tons of information online about healthy substitutions - try some of them and give your favorite recipes a healthy makeover.
- Lack of willpower
A lack of willpower means one thing: you are feeling deprived because you can't have the foods you really want to eat! An easy way to overcome this deprivation is to find ways to satisfy your cravings without ruining your diet. Either find ways to make your favorite dishes healthier (like mentioned above), or come up with new dishes that satisfy your cravings equally as well.
If nothing else, keep reminding yourself that no amount of fattening foods will be as satisfying as slipping on a smaller size clothing, or seeing your slender image in the mirror - or feeling so proud of yourself for achieving your weight loss goal!
- Doubt
Somewhere in the back of your mind, you may doubt that you can achieve your weight loss goal, and you are tempted to give up on the diet because of it. Keep reminding yourself that you CAN lose the weight, and that you are going to reach your goal no matter what. Look at older photographs of yourself when you were thin (if you have any). If you don't have any, look at photographs of slender people in magazines or online, and keep affirming that you can easily get your body into similar shape as theirs.
Sometimes all it takes is a little positive reinforcement to stir your motivation and renew your commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
